The Knife, in collaboration with Mt. Sims and Planningtorock, are to release the studio version of the opera ‘Tomorrow, In A Year’, on Brille Records on the 1^st March 2010.

Commissioned by Danish performance group Hotel Pro Forma to write the music for their opera based on Charles Darwin and his book ‘On the Origin of the Species’, The Knife decided to make this a collaborative process, working with artists Mt. Sims and Planningtorock for the first time, to capture the huge width of the Darwin and evolution theme. They extensively researched Darwin related literature and articles, with Olof attending a field recording workshop in the Amazon to find inspiration and to record sounds.

‘Tomorrow, In A Year’ is a unique musical project. Richard Dawkins’s gene trees have formed the basis of some of the musical composition, artificial sounds have been mixed with field recordings, with the music inspired by everything from the different stages of a bird learning its melody, to a song based on Darwin’s loving letters about his daughter Anne. These are compositions that challenge the conventional conception of opera music.

Pushing the experimental process further still, composer, choreographer, costume designer and set designer worked separately, only coming together 3 and a half months before the first performance of ‘Tomorrow, In A Year’ in Copenhagen on the 2^nd September 2009. Described as “shifting the position of operartic art in a single leap”, further performances of ‘Tomorrow, In A Year’ are confirmed to take place in Athens (8-9 Jan), Stockholm (29 Jan-1 Feb), and Munster (5 June), with further dates to be announced.

Olof Dreijer says: “At first it was very difficult as we really didn’t know anything about opera.  We’d never been to one. I didn’t even know what the word libretto meant. But after some studying, and just getting used to opera’s essence of pretentious and dramatic gestures, I found that there is a lot to learn and play with. In fact, our ignorance gave us a positive respectless approach to making opera. It took me about a year to become emotionally moved by an opera singer and now I really do. I really like the basic theatrical values of opera and the easy way it brings forward a narrative. We’ve approached this before in The Knife but never in such a clear way.”

Britt Daniel, Jim Eno, Eric Harvey and Rob Pope - collectively known as Spoon - have confirmed the release date of their first album in over two years and seventh overall: Transference will be released in Europe on ANTI Records on the 25th of January 2010.

Produced by the band, Transference is made up of 11 new gems that honor the Spoon tradition while pushing the envelope of the band's sound ever further. "Before Destruction" opens proceedings with a transfixing air of foreboding before "Is Love Forever?" and "The Mystery Zone" kick in with hooks that grip the listener's cortex with the tenacity of an aural tapeworm. "Who Makes Your Money" and first single "Written In Reverse" will be familiar to Spoon fans who witnessed the band playing prototypical live versions at select dates in 2008, as will "Got Nuffin," title track of the EP released by the band earlier this year.

MIDLAKE return in February 2010 with their much-anticpated third album: "The Courage Of Others"

One of Bella Union’s most successful and celebrated acts – MIDLAKE – make their long-awaited return in February 2010 with “THE COURAGE OF OTHERS”, their extraordinary third album…

It’s ironic that Midlake’s new album is titled “The Courage Of Others” because, if anything, the courage is all theirs. Namely, the courage to do what feels right and stay true to the spirit of artistic independence whilst ignoring any pressure to conform to expectations. The result is the Texas quintet’s third album, their most complete and beautiful body of work yet, best appreciated as a whole in the old-fashioned sense of an album - which makes perfect sense when you know Midlake linchpin Tim Smith’s fondness for the look and feel of past times.   

So what’s changed since The Trials of Van Occupanther, their second, hugely loved breakthrough album? Just as that record was in part inspired by the soft(er) rock of the early-to-mid 1970s – from Neil Young and America to Fleetwood Mac – so Midlake’s new album also looks to a slightly earlier, and definitely British, trad-tainted folk sound. It may share the same gorgeously analogue-warm electro-acoustic template as Van Occupanther but it’s a slower, darker and more carved record, both eerier and dreamier. Perfect, in other words, for its February release date, at the height of winter.

Neither do the new songs feature any hermit-scientists like Van Occupanther, or the mythical Roscoe. The songs that constitute The Courage Of Others, Tim says, are closer to his heart than those of their first two albums because, “I don’t feel I’m looking at the songs through someone else’s eyes. I’ve tried to keep it as true to myself as I could.” Guitarist Eric Pulido adds, “We didn’t want to make the same album as Van Occupanther, so we carried on moving and creating and pushing for a newer sound and emotion.”

“The Courage Of Others” is released on Bella Union records on 1st February 2010.

TOM WAITS is set to release Glitter and Doom Live, a collection of outstanding live tracks from his 2008 sold out US and European tour. This two CD set contains 17 live recordings from ten nights along the tour including, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Tulsa, Knoxville, Atlanta, Paris, Milan, Jacksonville, Dublin and Columbus. The second CD entitled, Tom Tales holds nearly 40 minutes of Waits quixotic ruminations on topics ranging from romantic spiders to injured vultures. The CD will also come with a booklet of live photos.

The vinyl version of Glitter and Doom Live will feature gatefold sleeve with live photos from the tour and contain all 17 tracks but no Tom Tales. Inside the LP, Anti- is providing a card w/mp3 download instructions, which will enable the buyer to download Tom Tales as well.

Musically, the live discs encapsulate Waits in all his chug, boom and steam. His shamanistic vocals, innovative arrangements, visionary lyrics, pounding rhythms and emotional melodies are all here. There are dark swampy tribal rhythms, ominous hymns, and cautionary tales all swirling around Waits’ unmistakable howl and croon. The CD has a dead man singing to his widow, a convict’s last words, an instructional dance number, lamenting sword swallowers and bragging pirates. All of the tracks were personally selected and sequenced to give you the feeling of one great night on tour.

On October 13, www.tomwaits.com is set to go live. MARTHA WAINWRIGHT SLIPPER EDITH PIAF-ALBUM!

Martha Wainwright stamps her je ne sais quoi on a beautiful selection of rare and acclaimed Edith Piaf songs, passionately sung and romantically interpreted by Martha on her stunning album ‘Sans Fusils, Ni Souliers, A Paris. Martha Wainwright’s Piaf Record’ out November 9th.

The album was recorded over three intimate performances in New York’s Dixon Place Theatre in June. Produced by Hal Willner, Martha Wainwright assembled a unique band of musicians including long-time collaborator Brad Albetta, who produced Martha’s first two albums, pianist Thomas Bartlett and electric guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Doug Wieselman to capture the French chanteuse’s venerable catalogue, beautifully coupled with Martha’s incredible, evocative and characterful voice.

Cautious of avoiding the cliché of looking sad, pretending to be drunk with a glass of absinthe on the table, Martha creates tension and urgency on this charming 12-track record - delivered with paralleled emotion conveying Edith Piaf’s mystical vulnerability. Highlights include ‘Adieu Mon Coeur’, ‘Vieux Piano’, ‘Une Enfant’ and a transfixing version of ‘Le Foule’.

Growing up in Montreal and speaking French at school, Martha was totally influenced and captivated by Piaf as a child, having listened to her music since the age of eight. “There are certain things about her that I have always been influenced by,” says Martha. “The emotive sensibility of her voice. She’s an incredibly emotional singer and I’ve always been an incredibly emotional singer and pained singer.”

Martha Wainwright will recreate the show at the Barbican, November 11^th when she comes to town for a special one-off performance.

METHODS OF MAYHEM SIGN TO LOUD & PROUD/ROADRUNNER RECORDS

New York, NY – Methods of Mayhem have found a new home with Loud & Proud/Roadrunner Records.

The star studded brainchild of Tommy Lee is currently finishing album production with producer Scott Humphrey (Rob Zombie, Nine Inch Nails, Motley Crüe). The new album will be Methods of Mayhem’s first release since their 1999 self-titled debut.  Album is due out worldwide in early 2010.

Lee exclaimed, “I’m so f@&*ing pumped!! I’ve signed with my friends at Loud & Proud / Roadrunner...what a perfect home for my second Methods of Mayhem record. We’re about to do what no team has ever done before...buckle up and hang on kids!”

Des Moines, IA – Grammy Award winning hard rock powerhouse Slipknot have announced a special edition release on Roadrunner Records of their seminal self-titled debut album.  This special CD/DVD piece will commemorate the 10^th anniversary of Slipknot’s first album’s release in 1999. Release is set for 9/9/09. The CD will feature 25 tracks, including the original album as well as rare demos, remixes, rare b-sides and more.

The companion documentary, entitled of the (sic): Your Nightmares, Our Dreams, is packed with behind the scenes footage of Slipknot from 1999.  This never before seen hour-long piece was directed by M. Shawn Crahan, who combed through his vast archives to compile the definitive chronicle of this important time in Slipknot’s career. This inside look features both live and backstage footage from around the world.  The DVD also features all the music videos from their debut cycle as well as other surprises.

In another first, Slipknot will host a one day festival in their hometown of Des Moines on 9/9/09. The show will feature 2 stages and a host of bands with Slipknot headlining. The second stage, sponsored by Jagermeister, will feature all local bands. An official announcement will be made soon.

Grammy award-winner Omar Rodriguez-Lopez of The Mars Volta joins Juliette Lewis in the studio to produce her 3^rd studio album with Rich Costey (Muse, Franz Ferdinand, NIN, Foo Fighters) mixing

Lewis forms a new band to bring Terra Incognita sound to life

After five years, two full length albums and countless high profile tours and festival gigs, including the Leeds Festival, Reading and Lollapalooza, Juliette Lewis is ready to unveil her new album Terra Incognita, scheduled for release 31 Aug 2009. With an exciting new sound and a significantly diverse collection of songs, Lewis decided to form a different band to capture her whole new groove and launch this next musical project. Instrumental in creating the sound for this new record is the album’s producer Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, leader of The Mars Volta.

“Because this album is so sonically different than anything I’ve done before and captures many flavors of my emotional life and voice, it needed an entirely new band,” declares Lewis. “Terra Incognita means unknown territory—and that’s where I wanted to go musically. The guitars are more wild and atmospheric. The groove is dark and deep and allow for a lot of sonic contrasts. It took me five years to really cut my teeth both as a performer and as a songwriter and I wanted to break all the habits I’d gotten used to and let songs develop out of a groove or simple piano notes and melody. In Omar I found a producer who understood all these facets and who could really unearth and interpret this musical identity. He blows my mind on many levels. It’s been a truly liberating and radical experience.”

“Everything she’s feeling, it’s just right there for you,” said Omar Rodriguez-Lopez of the recording. “It’s just honest. It’s her. All the music encapsulates her and it’s driven by her, and it’s made for her.”

Juliette and Omar met while both on tour at the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan in 2007 and soon bonded over their love of Fellini movies and the relationship between drama, visual images and songwriting. Together they have translated her ideas into an emotionally guttural and ultimately melodic and unpredictable, new sound.

There is a deep undercurrent on the entire record of contrasting themes; romance and tragedy, dreams and disillusionment. Her vocal performances showcase a remarkably dynamic range going from haunting to soulful and roaring.

Lewis wrote most of the 11 tracks with long time friend and musician Chris Watson over the past year and at home on piano using a tape recorder. She then recorded the album in between both of her and Omar’s tours at the end of 2008 at Rodriguez-Lopez’s studio in Brooklyn NY and Guadalajara Mexico. The record was mixed by the legendary Rich Costey (NIN, Muse, Foo Fighters).
